Over hill and dale

The autumn sun bathes the valley in golden light and makes the colourful leaves glow in the loveliest autumn hues. The “Indian summer” in the Rosental is the ideal time for a hiking holiday – yet spring, summer and winter also have much to offer hikers and walking enthusiasts!

Wellnesstrail “Happy Rock/Glücksfelsen / Sreča peč” This round hiking trail in the town of Ludmannsdorf is the ideal thing for the first day of a hiking holiday, and just right for loosening up muscles that are cramped from driving. The trail, which is just under 4 km long, begins at the former inn Gasthaus Sprachowitz in Lukowitz and leads along a Kneipp water-stepping stream to a mystery-shrouded waterfall. Breathe in the pure forest air and treat your feet to clear, cool water!

Mountain chapels of Maria Elend The two small chapels, high above the hamlet of Maria Elend in the town of St. Jakob, are a popular destination for strollers and hikers. The nearby Gebirtsquelle spring, the Christusquelle / Christ Spring, is said to have healing powers and the ringing of the Wishing Bell is an especially popular tradition. The square in front of the chapels offers a magnificent view of the upper Rosental Valley. Various paths lead to the chapels. Anyone who’d like to go on a slightly longer tour should take the Glückswanderweg “happiness hiking trail” of St. Jakob.

The Ice Hole / Eisloch – Geological round hiking trail A geological wonder of nature awaits you in the village of St. Margareten, in the hamlet of Hintergupf, under Mt. Matzen. On the round hiking trail, you can follow the traces of the Ice Age and find out more about it through the information boards along the trail. And in the Eisloch, a hollow in the forest floor, you can see ice even throughout the summer.

Lookout point Saligensitze in the Turiawald forest One stopping-place on the 20 km long hiking tour through the Turiawald is the place of the mythical Saligensitze seats - nine niche-like recesses on the southern side of a steep rock. The legend tells that the Saligen Women often rested there. And who were the Saligen Women? They were big, blonde women dressed in white garments, who liked helping people. Their legend is particularly well-known in the Rosental.
