Shimmering water and luxuriant blooms

Glittering water, flowering meadows and sparkling stones – you’re constantly coming across this or that natural jewel on a hike in the Rosental.

Small mountain lake Meerauge “Once upon a time, two oxen pulling a wagon of hay sank into the deep: it was all over in seconds. There was nothing to bear witness to their fate, to the dark horror. Not a ripple, not the least thing, was to be seen. It wasn’t until weeks later that the yoke of the oxen was found drifting in Lake Veldeser See on the other side of the mountain!”

According to the legend of the Meerauge (whose depth is still a matter of guesswork) it’s supposed to be connected underground with the lake of Bled, Veldeser See. Be that as it may – the next time you’re in the Rosental, you shouldn’t miss the chance to go on an excursion to the Bodental Valley and hike to the shimmering, turquoise Meerauge. It lies 1052m above sea level, and is accessible via a well-secured steep track. It can easily be reached from the inn Gasthof Bodenbauer, which is situated at the end of the Bodental. An ideal hike for young and old!

Waterfall Tschaukofall It’s worth making a trip just for the path to this superb natural monument, which is one of Austria’s natural beauty spots. The path leads over ladders and bridges, through ruggedly romantic Gorge Tscheppaschlucht. On the way, magnificent glimpses and views await you, and after about 90 minutes you reach the place where water dives from the sky. More than 500 litres of water per second plunge into the deep at the famous waterfall.
The steep track is very audaciously laid out and only suitable for good walkers. You’re advised to wear hiking boots. The shuttle bus will take you from any finishing point either back to the car park or to any of the other finishing points.

Hiking trail Hainschwanderweg The Water Adventure Trail in the village of Zell is an ideal hiking trail for families. From the Male-Säge estate in Zell-Oberwinkel, it leads along the revitalised Mill and Sawmill Trail, over wooden bridges and winding forest paths, up to the “Gornik” Schaumühle demonstration mill, where the past is brought to life. Along the hiking trail, which is graded as an easy walk, you can experience the power of water: the walk takes about 1.5 hours.

Daffodil meadows Very special jewels of the Rosental Valley are the daffodil meadows. But to be able to enjoy this magnificent wonder of nature, you need to be there at the right time. Because the meadows are only transformed into an exquisite, scented carpet of flowers for a brief spell in May and June. Neither the daffodil meadow on the Illitschalm Alpine pasture nor the daffodil meadow in the Bärental Valley present any great challenges for children – so a hike followed by a picnic on one of the daffodil meadows makes a perfect day trip for the whole family.
